Lobos need to get over past losses

by Ruben Douglas

Daily Lobo

Prior to the Air Force game, we have been struggling in conference play.

The benefit of having a young team is that victories and good play breeds confidence. Confidence is an essential component to success. Our record is sub-par, but if we had that confidence, our record would be 12-8 rather than 8-12.

There are many things you learn in competition and one lesson we are learning is that you cannot dwell on the past. If you dwell, it will carry over to the present, and in sports every game is a different and new situation. This season has been a continued learning experience.

This weekend is a big one for our team. We are preparing to redeem ourselves from the meltdown we had against the Wyoming Cowboys and the loss to the Colorado State Rams.

First, on Saturday, we play Wyoming. That team has to be respected due to its success the past couple of seasons. The Cowboys are an athletic run-and-gun-style team. They have a good post player, Uche Nsonwu-Amadi, who their offense goes through. If we can limit his touches and contain their guards we should be fine.

On Monday, Colorado State comes to The Pit and that has to be a must-win situation for our team. CSU outplayed us in our last meeting but that should not be the case this time. The Rams' strategy is to get the ball inside to their post players and play from there. That's about it, they keep their offense simple and they play hard.

Like I said earlier, this weekend is big for our team for many reasons. One is to improve our record both in the Mountain West and our overall record.

These games will also help us get a respectable seeding in the MWC Tournament, but above all, they will assist us with our confidence and momentum in our approach to future games. So come out this weekend and support our team as we compete against our conference foes.
