Lobo baseball begins conference play

Staff Report

The UNM baseball team kicks off conference play today against the Air Force Academy at Lobo Field.

The Lobos (7-6) won two out of four games last week, splitting a pair of games with New Mexico State University and Portland State University.

Leading the way for UNM has been a slew of offensive players and stellar pitching from junior stud James Vermilyea. Vermilyea will pitch today's game, which bodes well for the Lobos because he has been nearly unhittable. In his last outing, Vermilyea tossed eight innings, giving up two runs while striking out 14 in UNM's 6-2 victory over NMSU.

First base slugger Chris Alexander has been tearing the cover off the ball of late for the Lobos. He hit four homers in the four games last week on his way to earning Mountain West player of the week honors.

Outfielder Sean Murray is leading UNM with a .526 batting average. Cory Lizarraga raised his average almost 100 points to .432 last week.
