Editor,
In response to UNM President Garcia's comments reported in the Daily Lobo Jan. 29, 2003, that UNM faculty took a pay cut in the last year and that this was not acceptable to the University, what is also not acceptable is that UNM staff took a pay cut as well. This was not mentioned in the article. President Garcia was quoted in the same article as being supportive of a two percent increase in staff compensation. Without a meaningful increase in state funding for employees' health insurance, and with insurance rates expected to go up yet again, a two percent increase in compensation will be . . . meaningless.
We need to aim higher.
Harry Norton
President, United Staff-UNM
