Editor,
Included in your Feb. 12 career issue was a statement of academic codes of conduct; “faculty members . . . an obligation . . . to foster and defend freedom of inquiry and instruction and free expression.”
But when a respected faculty member expressed this freedom in regard to Sept. 11, the outcry from the closed-minded or, rather, small-minded members of the community has forced the early retirement of a major voice at UNM.
So much for intellectual ideals versus the hard reality of the pursuit for freedom in the American campus environment.
