Editor,
If we treat animals like animals, can we treat hypocrites like hypocrites?
After reading Eric Howerton's column, I sort of picture him as a savage, tearing meat from a bone with his teeth, with blood running down his chin, dressed in furs, and petting his dog now and again. At the very best, I would still hate to eat across the table from him.
As long as people like him eat meat with such enjoyment, there will be factory farms, slaughterhouses where frightened animals are hung by one leg and, if they are lucky, they are rendered unconscious before they are skinned. Because money is such a huge factor, speed and enormous numbers of animals in small spaces are the rule. He not only does not believe in humane treatment for animals, he only believes in treating pets with compassion. It has been proven that if the land used for cattle were to be used for grain there would be more than enough food to feed all the people in the world.
But as long as there are so many self-indulgent people around, starvation and cruelty to animals will abound. And if he cannot see this, he has either not done his homework before he babbled on, or is so self-pleasing that he refuses to see the truth. Open your eyes to the truth and your heart to all living creatures. You will be the better for it.
