Employee violates alcohol policy

Technical coordinator had booze in Popejoy basement

University police are investigating a possible violation of the University's alcohol policy by an employee of the Department of Media Arts.

Officers were called to Popejoy Hall Feb. 16 in response to a report of two individuals wandering the corridors of the building's basement.

When police began searching Popejoy's basement, they found James Roy, technical coordinator for the Department of Media Arts. According to the UNMPD report, Roy had watery, bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and was unable to keep his balance while being interviewed by police.

The report states that Roy was in the building's basement to watch movies as part of his normal work duties.

After speaking with Roy, police searched the room he was in and found a bottle of whiskey on a shelf and six empty bottles of beer in a trashcan.

According to the report, Roy told police that he had not been drinking that evening, but a student who was with him in the basement reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol.

According to the report, after police told Roy that they would be taking his keys to the building because he was violating the University's policy on alcohol, he reportedly became belligerent.

After repeatedly asking police to return his keys, Roy reportedly began slamming chairs on the ground and told police "you better cough up my fucking keys now."

After telling police he would not leave without his keys, officers handcuffed Roy and escorted him outside of Popejoy Hall where they released him.

Police entered the bottle of whiskey, one empty beer bottle and Roy's keys into UNMPD evidence and left a message with Roy's supervisor regarding the incident.

Roy's supervisor, Ira Jaffe, chairman of the Department of Media Arts, said he had not yet contacted police regarding their message.

According to the University Business Policies and Procedures Manual, the consumption of alcohol by students, faculty or staff is prohibited unless under specific circumstances.

University policy states that staff members who consume alcohol on campus shall receive disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.

No criminal charges were filed against Roy or the student, John Lore.
