Staff Report
University of New Mexico athletes are getting smarter -- or at least their cumulative grade-point average is getting better.
For the first time, Lobo athletes combined for a GPA of more than 3.0, with a 3.03 in the fall 2002 semester. This marks the highest GPA since the University began tracking student-athletes in the fall of 1988. It also marks the eighth consecutive semester that the GPA has risen among this group.
Among the 470 total student-athletes are 150 individuals who had a GPA of 3.50 or higher and 31 with a perfect 4.0.
Leading the way on the men's side is the ski team with a 3.7. Next are tennis, 3.44, soccer, 3.2, and golf, 3.15. The baseball team, 3.04, tennis, soccer and track, 3.09, teams all posted their highest semester GPAs for the men to date.
On the women's side, the basketball team, 3.52, posted the best average with skiing, 3.5, tennis, 3.34, and golf, 3.31, following close behind. The women's basketball team's GPA was its highest for a semester since charting began.
