Tennis, track teams head out this weekend

Staff Report

Men's Tennis

The UNM men's tennis team takes its 59th national ranking to the Northwest this weekend to battle 20th-ranked University of Washington and 73rd-ranked University of Oregon.

The Lobos have yet to lose a point in the spring season with 7-0 victories over Northern Arizona University and the University of San Francisco coming last weekend.

With two singles victories in the last two matches, senior Bart Scott has moved to within 14 wins of tying UNM's all-time singles win leader Pepe Cabellero. Cabellero played for the Lobos from 1995-99 and currently holds the record with 96 career singles victories. It will be a daunting task as UNM has just 15 matches remaining this season.

Scott is currently ranked 60th in the country with junior Divan Coetzee coming in at 67th.

The Lobos' doubles tandem of Ryan Stotland and Brent Salazar hold a 59th ranking.

The Huskies are led by two top-20 players in sophomore Alex Vlaski (No. 5) and senior Matt Hanlin (No. 11.) Washington has yet to play in the spring season.

Oregon has played a pair of mock-dual matches against 23rd-ranked Wake Forest and Texas A&M so far this year. The Ducks scored two upset victories against Texas A&M in singles competition.

Track and Field

The UNM track and field team travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend for the Air Force Invitational.

The Lobos will look to ride last week's impressive showing at the Pole Vault Summit exhibition in Reno, Nev.

Transfer Brandon Bennett cleared 16-08.75, enough for second place in the college men's second group. On the women's side, Bridgid Isworth, also a transfer, vaulted 13 feet, placing fourth in the first group. Isworth, a sophomore, hails from Melbourne, Australia.

The rest of the track and field team will look to perform well in the team's first indoor competition of the season.
