UNM President Chris Garcia has named an Anderson Schools of Management professor as his Special Adviser to Economic Development, a position that entails encouraging, coordinating and promoting the economic development activities of campus programs and departments.
John Young, who teaches Organizational Studies within the business school, was chosen for the position because of his lengthy background in related fields, Garcia said.
"Dr. Young has taught courses in entrepreneurship and small business management at the Anderson Schools of Management for 15 years, where he serves as the coordinator of the Entrepreneurial Studies Emphasis program," Garcia said in a UNM press release. "His background and his areas of expertise make him a very good fit for the position."
The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Development position will require Young to represent the President's Office in economic development matters involving government and business organizations and will help guide the University's participation in the economic development of the state.
Young will manage the development activities of all schools, colleges, centers and branch campuses to better leverage the University's financial resources. The Special Adviser is also tasked with securing funds from external agencies and interacting with the University's internal and external constituents on economic development matters.

"I look forward to working with UNM's central administration, the various colleges within the University, state and local governments and other organizations to facilitate job creation by starting new businesses and growing existing businesses in New Mexico," Young said.
Young earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Cincinnati in 1968, his master's degree in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1980, from the University of Kansas, in Organization and Administration.
He is also an original member of the Board of Directors of the newly created New Mexico Small Business Investment Corporation, an organization with the mission to stimulate the economic development and job creation in New Mexico, particularly in rural communities.
Among other awards and honors, Young is the 1990 recipient of the "Excellence for Albuquerque's Economy Award," presented by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and the Entrepreneurial Education Foundation of Denver's "1997-98 University Program of the Year Award."
"Economic development is a high priority of the University, especially as we work with the new administration of Santa Fe," Garcia said.
