Campus museum robbed of valued San Ildefonso art

Staff Report

UNMPD detectives are investigating a daytime burglary at the Maxwell Museum that netted three items estimated to be worth $1,500.

The burglary occurred Dec. 4, between 12:30 p.m. and 3:45, when a male entered the museum, walked around the gift shop and then pried and broke the glass of a display case to get to the items inside.

The museum's director told police no one was in the area of the museum at the time of the theft. According to the report, no one heard glass being broken and no one knew the exact time the theft.

An employee in the gift shop told police that the suspected man entered the gift shop, looked around for a few minutes and then left in the direction of where the theft occurred.

The employee said she had seen the man before but the report does not say in what context.

The report states that the suspect pried and broke apart glass on the display case to get to the items inside.

What were taken were two San Ildefonso ceramic plates, one black with a feather design and one with cloud designs and a San Ildefonso ceramic jar with a blackware polished finish.

While the suspect was taking the items, police say he cut himself and left several droplets of blood at the scene.

The blood droplets led outside to a trail police followed west to Redondo Drive where it halted at a crosswalk.

It is unclear if police were able to obtain any fingerprints from the case, but they did take samples of the blood.

Museum officials provided photographs of the three items to campus police.

The report states that there is a security camera system in the museum, but it is not known if it was working at the time of the burglary.
