UNM police and the Albuquerque Fire Department responded to a fire call at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house Nov. 27.
Michael Koller, president of the fraternity, said members called University police and the fire department after they noticed smoke coming through the floor in the fraternity house at 1811 Mesa Vista Rd. near campus.
According to the UNM police report, smoke was coming from the cracks in the house's wood floors in front of and around the fireplace.
Koller said members were not using the fireplace at the time of the fire.
"We don't know how it started," he said.
An Albuquerque Police Department spokesman said the report on the incident was not available Wednesday because it was still being processed by administrators. The spokesman was unable to comment on the cause of the fire or if the case is currently being investigated.

Koller said fire fighters ripped out the section of floor that the smoke was coming from, and then used hoses to put out the fire.
According to the police report, the source of the fire was somewhere between the first and second floors. Fire fighters also ripped out a portion of the ceiling below the fire.
Koller added that there was not extensive damage to the house, but that repairs will need to be made.
He said it is up to the fraternity's Housing Court to determine how and when repairs will be made, still he added, the house does have insurance, but he was unsure about what kind it is.
The Housing Court is made up of fraternity alumni who make decisions regarding the house and surrounding property.
The president of the fraternity said nobody was injured in the fire and that there were only about four or five people in the house because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
According to the police report, after fire fighters made sure the fire was out, members of the fraternity were allowed back inside.
