Top UNM singles player to compete in championship

Senior Scott one of 32 competing in intercollegiate tourney

Staff Report

UNM senior Bart Scott is part of the elite in men's tennis - he is one of only 32 players competing for a national singles title at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

Scott was invited to the choice tournament based on his first-rate performance in the Region VII Regional Championships Oct. 23-27 in Las Vegas, Nev.

He advanced to the final match of the tournament's main event, but was defeated by San Diego State University's Oliver Maiberger.

Maiberger is the eighth-best competitor in the nation according to the Sept. 9 Omni Hotels/ITA rankings and top seed in the Regional VII tournament.

Scott had not lost a set in the tournament until he faced Maiberger and he came in as the seventh seed overall. Maiberger needed three sets to beat Scott 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
