UNM senior Bart Scott is part of the elite in men's tennis - he is one of only 32 players competing for a national singles title at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Scott was invited to the choice tournament based on his first-rate performance in the Region VII Regional Championships Oct. 23-27 in Las Vegas, Nev.
He advanced to the final match of the tournament's main event, but was defeated by San Diego State University's Oliver Maiberger.
Maiberger is the eighth-best competitor in the nation according to the Sept. 9 Omni Hotels/ITA rankings and top seed in the Regional VII tournament.
Scott had not lost a set in the tournament until he faced Maiberger and he came in as the seventh seed overall. Maiberger needed three sets to beat Scott 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

En route to the finals, Scott took out UNM teammate Divan Coetzee, who was the tournaments fifth seed 6-4, 6-0 and ninth-seeded Valintino Pest of San Diego State 6-3, 6-2. He beat second-seeded Guillaume Bouvier from Boise State University 6-4, 6-2.
Coetzee worked his way up to the semifinals, playing a consistent game against SDSU's Gabe Coren, winning 6-4, 7-5 and defeating13th seeded Erik Nyman of BYU 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. He also beat Boise State's Beck Roghaer 6-4, 6-0.
UNM sophomore Ryan Stotland defeated three seeded players in three days, unexpectedly climbing to the semifinal match against Scott.
He topped fourth-seeded Felix Hardt of SDSU who was ranked 75th in the nation 6-3, 7-6 and 19th seed Federico Ueltschi of Montana State 4-6, 6-3: 6-1.
He also defeated 14th seeded Matias Silva from Boise State 6-4, 6-1.
Stotland's improbable run came to a halt in the quarterfinal round in a match with Coetzee.
