Spikers beat UNLV, fall to SDSU

The UNM volleyball team spilt a pair of tough Mountain West Conference matches this weekend at the Johnson Arena.

The Lobos (8-19, 3-11 MWC) lost a hard-fought match in five games 30-26, 24-30, 30-27, 21-30 and 14-16 to San Diego State University Friday. UNM was led by senior Staci Matsen, who had a career-high 20 kills. Junior Anna Reines and senior Vanessa Shields also were impressive in defeat with 19 and 14 kills, respectively. Senior libero Blaire Burns also stood out in the loss with a career-high 25 digs.

On Saturday, the Lobos downed the University of Nevada at Las Vegas 3-2 in a five game match 28-30, 24-30, 30-21, 30-25 and 20-18. Reines again stood out for the Lobos with a career-best 27 kills. Shields earned her 10th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 14 digs. Libero Burns had 25 digs for the Lobos for the second straight night. Sophomore Monica Meihack also had a career night with 61 assists, 11 digs and 2 aces.

UNM heads to Fort Collins, Colo., Thursday, Nov. 21, for the MWC Championship tournament.

The Lobos open the tournament with a rematch of Friday night's game against SDSU. The game will be televized on Comcast Cable, Ch. 72.
