Editor,
I am responding to Mr. Kiska's comments in the Wednesday, Nov. 6 regent's article: "there is a problem with University employees that have reached retirement age."
I resent Mr. Kiska's insinuations that employees he feels should "be retired" are worthless to this institution. What an indignity for longtime employees to be called "moss." I have been here 20 years and the people that I have worked for can attest to my competence and the quality of my work.
I am not "hanging on" to take advantage - I earn my pay and benefits. If he is in favor of paying new employees a lower salary, then he better have some reversions implemented. Obviously, he is not well informed on current hiring policies. New employees are hired at least at mid-point salary schedule, or market status. There are new employees being hired for like jobs at a higher salary than that afforded old employees.
It is an affront to UNM employees to be represented by someone with Mr. Kiska's convictions. The quality of any institution, organization or business is only the reflection of the worthiness of its employees - and nothing worthwhile is achieved by the deprecation of its people with low esteem and low wages.
