LETTER: Journalism accreditation loss taken far too lightly

Editor,

Kudos and congratulations are in order for the University of New Mexico! Way to go, losing your accreditation for the journalism program in the C&J Department.

After all, it was just one more pesky thing that the school had to do to prove it was an upper-level institution of higher learning. And now we don't need to worry about it.

Dr. Hall's assertion that the money will be spent in a more productive way sounds hollow. Like someone who is trying to spin the best possible result out of a horrible situation, "Well, we failed, but now your money is going to be spent on improving the facilities for the hordes of people who will arrive when they realize we are the best of the flunking departments out there."

If UNM is going to treat its C&J Department with this much neglect and contempt, it's not worth our time, effort and money to attend. Students will go someplace else where they will be appreciated.

And speaking of that, this development leaves students who are in the program and students that, like me, were planning on enrolling in the spring, with a problem: which school should we transfer to in order to get our journalism, or public relations or advertising degrees?
