COLUMN: Book fair to showcase UNM faculty writers

by Teresa Marquez and Carolyn Mountain

UNM Library Columnists

The holiday season is almost upon us and for these festive days, the Center For Southwest Research and DILARES in the UNM General Library will sponsor the first-ever Encantos: A Book Fair and Guatemala Market this Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon to 5 p.m.

If you are thinking about making the season less stressful, Encantos will be a fun way to deal with the coming holiday events. Writers will be present to sign their books

Encantos is primarily a celebration in honor of New Mexico's writers designed to promote literacy and the written word. The state is very fortunate in having a large number of writers, some of whom have received national recognition. UNM is also fortunate in having a number of writers in the English Department, some of who will be present to sign their books from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Rudolfo Anaya, author of the classic novel, Bless Me, Ultima, recently honored with the National Medal of Arts by the White House, was on the faculty of the UNM English Department. His children's books, The Farolitos of Christmas and Farolitos for Abuelo are favorites for the holiday season.

Another member of the English Department and a published author is Sharon O. Warner, head of the Creative Writing Program. Her novel, Deep in the Heart, has received much attention as a new voice in women's fiction. Lisa Ch†vez and Dan Mueller are members of the Creative Writing Program. Lisa Ch†vez is the author of, In an Angry Season and Destruction Bay, as well as many anthologies of multicultural American literature. Dan Mueller is the author of a collection of stories How Animals Mate, which received the Sewanee Fiction Prize, and of other short fiction.

Joining this illustrious group is E. A. Mares, a poet, novelist, essayist and also a former member of the English Department. He is the founder of the Writers' Inn and is well known for his interpretation of Padre Martinez as expressed in his play, "I Returned and Saw Under the Sun." Rounding this out is Demetria Martinez, author of Mother Tongue, The Devil's Workshop and other books of poetry. We invite you to bring your family and friends to meet and converse with your favorite authors!

This is also an opportunity to pick up gifts for Holiday giving as you amble through the Guatemala Market. This will feature colorful purse, bags, jewelry, hacky sacks, children's clothes and many other items suitable for holiday buying.

The entire event is free and open to the public. For further information please call 277-0582
