ASUNM vice president
We are nearing the tail end of the semester and we all know what that means. Suddenly it feels as if everything is due all at once!
I know that with all the extra schoolwork it is hard to remember what is going on with your student government. That is why I am going to make it as easy as possible by giving you an overview of important events being brought to you by the Associated Students of UNM in the upcoming weeks.
ASUNM Students Special Events, the Agora Crisis Center and Students Educating Peers About Sex are sponsoring another free self-defense class on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. To register, please call SEPAS at 277-6138. There are a limited number of spaces available, so call soon! The location will be given to you when you register. The last one was a great success and I hope that many more students will take advantage of this life-saving event.

If you are an undergraduate chartered student organization and have not asked for an appropriation this semester, your last chance to turn one in is on Friday, Nov. 15, at noon. An appropriation bill allocates money to a specific organization, for a specific purpose and for a specific amount. It is the policy of the senate to fund only those organizations that have been chartered by the Student Activities Office, and only one time per semester.
Appropriation bills include funding to student organizations for trips (seminars, workshops, conferences, etc.) as deemed appropriate by the Finance Committee, unexpected expenses, or one-time equipment purchases.
To apply for an appropriation you will need to pick up a form at the ASUNM Senate Office (Student Service Center 262), complete the form and return it to the ASUNM office by Friday, Nov. 15, at noon. Your organization will then need to have a representative at the last committee meeting of the semester which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva Lecture Hall. The appropriation will then be sent to the senate with a recommendation and will be voted on during the last full senate meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva. Once approved by the full senate, it will be sent to the ASUNM president for approval. The funds that you receive will be available to your organization to spend until the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2003.
Every fall, the ASUNM Elections Commission oversees the election of 10 senator positions and the time has come once again! As members of the undergraduate student body, we need to take the time to research the senatorial candidates so that we can elect senators who are representative of the entire student body and that are motivated to get things accomplished.
I encourage you to read about the candidates in the Daily Lobo this week and get out and vote on Election Day, Wednesday, Nov. 13. The polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SRC Commons, Anderson School of Management, Mitchell Hall, College of Nursing, Dane Smith Hall, Centennial Library, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Zimmerman Library and Johnson Center. We hope to see you there!
For all of the students that are concerned about a possible tuition increase next year, please join us at the last senate meeting of the semester to hear the vice president for business and finance, Julie Weaks Gutierrez, speak to the senate about tuition issues. This is a great opportunity to find out how the tuition process works. She will be speaking on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Kiva.
I know there is a lot going on in these last few weeks but I hope that you will participate in the events mentioned above and will enjoy the final stretch of the 2002 fall semester. And remember that you are always welcome to join us at our next full senate meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Kiva.
