UNM spikers find roadtrip to Utah unkind

Staff Report

The UNM volleyball team lost two road matches this weekend to Mountain West Conference rivals Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.

Utah 3, UNM 1

On Friday, the Lobos traveled to 20th-ranked Utah and got off to a good start winning the first game 30-25.

After that it was downhill for UNM as it lost the next three games 20-30, 24-30 and 26-30.

Vanessa Shields recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman and Utah native Chelsea Sondrup returned to her home state contributing 10 kills and one solo block.

Head coach Kelley Sliva was optimistic about the Lobos play,

"We've made a lot of progress playing a top-20 team as we did tonight," she said in a press release. "In the first game we were able to take out their middles, but we didn't serve strong or pass well enough to win. "I'm pleased with our overall effort and I know we can play better. If we do the things we need to do to improve, serving and passing, then we can play better. We just have to make good decisions."

BYU 3, UNM 0

UNM went to BYU on Saturday and did not fair as well.

The Cougars swept the Lobos in three games.

UNM was competitive early on but fell apart as the match went on losing 27-30, 20-30 and 13-30.

"We're disappointed," Sliva said. "We could not score and as a result are frustrated. We're going back into to the gym and work on the things we need to work on."

Junior Anna Reines led the Lobos with seven kills. Senior Blaire Burnes had 13 digs and sophomore Monica Meihack had 29 assists.

UNM hosts Wyoming and Colorado State next weekend in The Pit. The matches begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
