Let the show begin!

How do you, as college students, prefer to spend your free time? For me, a good movie is a great way to unwind and relieve stress from a busy schedule, class, and day. As a mainstream form of entertainment, going to the movies is a great way to spend your free time. Along these lines, I have a great treat for you ... the ASUNM Southwest Film Center.

This may be your first time to hear about this well-kept secret, however I challenge you to check out the Southwest Film Center, as it is an awesome and provocative theater experience. Temporarily located in the Center for the Arts Building, Room 2018, the Southwest Film Center is showing a diverse array of cinema. Soon, it will be back in the newly renovated Student Union Building, coming home to a new, permanent theater.

To those that know about it, the Southwest Film Center is considered a crown jewel here at UNM. Being one of the executive agencies in ASUNM, it has existed since 1967. The ASUNM Southwest Film Center (SWFC) has been known throughout the Southwest as "one of the premier theaters for the alternative cinema." As one of ASUNM's longstanding traditions, the SWFC showcases several film debuts to the state of New Mexico, sponsors independent filmmakers for screenings and occasionally previews first run features.

If you remember "Welcome Back Days" from the beginning of the semester, you might recall the free showing of "The Wizard of Oz" by the Duck Pond. This event was partially brought to you by the center.

In the coming weeks, the center will demonstrate its diverse selection in films. The weekend of the 18th, the center will show two films from Italy that were made in 1959 and 1960 titled "General Della Rovere" and "Rocco and his Brothers," respectively. In contrast, the following weekend the center will strive to frighten you by showing two horror films. "Soft for Digging" and "Don't Look Now" promise to send chills up your spine.

If you are a student or a student group looking for programming to entertain your personal interest or a large audience, please give the Southwest Film Center a try. I assure you, that you will be delighted with the results. This would be a great way to capitalize on already organized programming here at UNM.

Speaking of programming, ASUNM Homecoming is just around the corner. Acting as another executive agency for ASUNM, Homecoming is reaching out to more students and spicing up their activities. Get excited for the week of the 21st to see Homecoming unfold. If you are planning on participating in the Cherry/Silver games or getting involved with the Campus Rodeo your application is due on Oct. 18, 2002, by 5 p.m. to the Student Activities Center, Room 280. In addition, if you are planning on running for Homecoming King or Queen, those applications are due tomorrow, Oct. 8, 2002, by 5 p.m. to the same location.

Whether it is attending a Southwest Film Center movie or getting involved with Homecoming, please take advantage of the programming provided by ASUNM.

Jennifer Onuska is ASUNM's president.
