Police believe series of auto burglaries related

Fourteen reported incidents around

UNM police are investigating a series of auto burglaries that were reported Friday and Saturday at a number of locations around campus.

According to the UNM Police Department dispatch log, officers responded to and filed reports concerning 14 auto burglaries that were reported in a two-day period.

"We got hit hard," said UNMPD Commander James Daniels. "We're handling it."

Daniels said the department is investigating the rash of burglaries as if they were related and that police would be conducting "selective enforcement."

But he said he could not elaborate on the ongoing investigation because he did not want to alert suspects to police investigative efforts.

The burglaries, five of which were reported Friday and nine on Saturday, occurred all around campus.

Of the 14 reports filed with UNM police, eight were available for public review Monday.

Of those eight, burglaries were reported from as far south on campus as the parking lot at The Pit and as far north as G Lot on north campus.

The thief or thieves used a variety of methods to gain entry into vehicles. Some vehicles had their windows broken, some showed no signs of forced entry and one truck simply had its rear window opened because it was unlocked.

Of the eight burglaries that had police reports available Monday, owners reported a large variety of items taken.

Car stereos and CDs were the most common items stolen but owners also reported everything from floor mats and a laptop computer to golf clubs and sunglasses stolen.

The sum of the approximate dollar value of all goods stolen from the eight vehicles was reported to be $16,256 including one vehicle that had nearly $11,000 worth of designer clothing and shoes, CDs, books and assorted items stolen.

Two of the burglaries occurred at the parking lot south of The Pit Friday night during the George Strait concert while others occurred in the A lot south of Redondo Village, the west parking lot of Mesa Vista Hall and in the parking structure at 2501 Campus Blvd. NE.
