MWC gets four weekend wins

CSU falls, BYU escapes late, Air Force dominates

Mountain West Conference teams won four-of-five non-conference games on this, the final full weekend of non-conference play.

Wyoming 34, The Citadel 30

Derek Armah rushed for a career high 181 yards and scored the winning touchdown with 6:12 left as the University of Wyoming snapped a school-record 12-game losing streak.

The Cowboys' last win came against Central Michigan University on Sept. 21, 2001.

The win did not come easily, though. The Citadel had a chance to win in the closing minutes and drove the ball to the Wyoming 15-yard line with 1:26 left but a false start penalty on fourth and inches halted the drive and the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs.

Cowboys' quarterback Casey Bramlet completed 20 of 25 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns.

Receiver Scooter Johnson caught nine passes for 124 yards for the Div. I-AA Bulldogs. Nehemiah Broughton led the Citadel with 175 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Air Force 48, Navy 7

Air Force Academy quarterback Chance Harridge ran for a career high 161 yards in a 48-7 pummeling of the U.S. Naval Academy. Harridge also had four touchdowns and a career high 107 yards on six of seven passing.

The Midshipmen took the lead early in the game on a five-yard touchdown run by Kyle Eckel. After that, it was all Air Force.

The Falcons _ who are second in the nation in running _ ran all over Navy, piling up 429 rushing yards. AFA improved to 5-0 with the win and is off to its best start since 1997 when it started out 7-0.

BYU 35, Utah State 34

Brigham Young University (3-2) overcame a 27-point halftime deficit to beat Utah State University 35-34.

The Cougars were led by runningback Curtis Brown who had 217 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The Aggies built a comfortable lead in the first half when Jerome Dennis ran back an interception 75 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the second quarter to give Utah State a commanding 34-7 lead.

The second half was all BYU. Brown got the rally started with a one-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter. Four minutes later he scored again, this time on a 32-yard run.

Cougar quarterback Brett Engemann completed the comeback with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Reid with 6:46 left in the game. It was the first lead of the game for BYU.

Engemann finished with 294 yards on 26-of-43 passing.

Fresno St. 32, Colo. St. 30

25th-ranked Colorado State University was upset by Fresno State on Friday night.

Rams' quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt's two-point conversion attempt was batted down with 50 seconds left. Two Bulldog defenders easily batted down the pass.

Van Pelt had a good game throwing for 214 yards and running for 125 more but he was not able to lead CSU (4-2) to a victory.

Fresno State dominated the first half and held on for the win relying on precision passing from Paul Pinegar who finished 20-of-28 for 184 yards.

UNLV 21, Nevada 17

UNLV beat Nevada in a Silver State showdown for the third straight year.

Larry Croom caught two touchdown passes including the game-winning TD with 6:03 left in the game.

A crucial roughing the kicker penalty on fourth-and-13 gave the Rebels new life.

Two plays later Croom snuck behind the defense and scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Jason Thomas.

Thomas finished 16-for-35 and 262 yards. He also ran for 62 more yards.
