LETTER: Business school's new exit test hurts students

Editor,

I am writing in response to a bombshell that the administration at the Anderson Schools of Management released to the December graduates last week.

We were all notified that in order to graduate we must pass an exit test that will be administered to us in November. There are several issues about this test that students are concerned with. The first thing is the lack of communication. It is too late in the game for the administration to change the rules on us. We should have been notified when we entered the school that we would have to take a test to graduate. We have sold all of our core class books back, leaving us with nothing to study from.

With one month's notice there is no time to prepare for such an exam without proper materials. There is a requirement for all graduates to schedule a graduation appointment. At that time not one of us was notified that we would have to pass this test, or even take it for that matter. At these appointments we all signed contracts saying what we needed in order to graduate and this was not a requirement then.

This test is also a direct insult to our professors. It is basically saying that they have no right to give us the grades and that the administration is responsible in telling who should pass a class. If for some reason I do not pass a part of this test, I will consider my education worthless and should be reimbursed for the money I spent on taking those classes. However, unlike the administration I have faith in my professors' abilities and assume I will pass all of the parts of this ridiculous test.

The administration is also saying that this is for the school's accreditation. I find that it is hard to believe for a school to lose their accreditation on administering a test that there is nothing to compare to. We should have been pre-tested to see if we have actually learned anything in the school. What happens then if we score lower - does it mean that our professors have made us dumber?

I am not the only one upset about this matter. There are many petitions going around to show the administration how we as students feel about the matter. If Anderson Schools of Management was hoping that as an alumnus I would donate to this school they are severely mistaken. They have taken this one step to far.
