Homecoming on the Range will kick off its first party on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m., with chalk murals, live music from CIVITAS, and a chance to meet the candidates for King and Queen in front of the UNM Bookstore.
The chalk murals are one of a series of Cherry/Silver competitions that student organizations can participate in.
Homecoming chairwoman Keri Shiplet said that the Cherry/Silver competitions have been a tradition at UNM for years. Student organizations that participate in the competitions will accumulate points and the winners will be announced at the football game. The winners will be awarded the Cherry/Silver cup for one year, until the next winners are announced at next year's homecoming game.

CIVITAS, a local band that consists of three UNM students, will perform in front of the bookstore from noon to 1 p.m. playing an eclectic mix of reggae, Latin and bluegrass music.
"It's cool to be able to reach out to the UNM community with our music," said band member and UNM student RJ Perez.
The Buffalo Exchange will dress the band as well as provide T-shirts for the band to throw out to audience members.
UNM bookstore Marketing Manager Anicia Esposito wants this year's homecoming events to reach out to the students and felt it would be a great idea to have a band that included UNM students.
"I want to get everyone active in the homecoming activities and to refocus on giving homecoming back to the students," Esposito said.
She said she is proud to have a partnership between the UNM bookstore and ASUNM to kick off the first party of the homecoming week.
The chalk murals will begin at 10 a.m. in front of the UNM bookstore and CIVITAS will perform from noon to 1 p.m.
