The Center for Academic Program support is UNM's main tutorial service to help students succeed by providing academic assistance, one-on-one tutoring appointments and group labs.

The program also offers English as a second language tutors, a library and help with study strategies. Students may also use its Web or Smarthinking online programs. During selected nights, the program provides services around UNM through CAPS Across Campus, a program intended to bring tutoring to students by making its services available at multiple campus locations.

CAPS is a free program offered to University students. Part of the students' registration fee pays for the program. The tutors are UNM upper-class undergraduates and graduate students.

"This program is a good way for students to get back what they pay for," CAPS receptionist Niki Mak said.

Students who want to use the process only need their Lobo identification cards for registration.

"The CAPS program is a conducive environment for the students," said CAPS tutor Leah Damiani, a biochemistry major. "The tutor and the tutees are able to teach each other."

Students have the opportunity to review the tutorial services they receive, as well as the opportunity to evaluate the service they receive by completing a critique form.

In addition to CAPS, several tutorial services are available to University students.

The Diversity Programs in the School of Engineering will be offering tutorial services beginning in two weeks when the new study/computer center, located on the second floor of Tapy Hall, opens.

The Peer and Tutoring Program offered by the Office of Cultural & Ethnic Programs, 272-2728, is available free to first or second-year medical students with special academic requirements.

The CAPS tutoring service can be contacted at 277-4560.
