UNM goes online for employment opportunities

New technology speeds up application process for UNM jobs

Last month University officials expanded electronic options for those interested in becoming UNM employees.

The expansion, coming in the form of a new Web site, is meant to provide better coordination between Human Resources, University departments and colleges with job openings.

The Web site, created by Electronic Management Information Systems, can be found at http://ejobs.unm.edu.

"We can now integrate the HR center's job," said Carol March, communications coordinator for the electronic management group. "This will revolutionize the way applicants communicate with UNM. And we will have less problems helping people."

By January, eJOBS will be the centralized system to inquire about UNM staff employment, March said. Job opportunities in all departments will be posted on the site.

This semester, 28 percent of all UNM staff applicants have used eJOBS, March said. She added that the program will continue to gain users because the new system efficiently links UNM departmental information.

Under the old system, applicants contacted Human Resources to receive updated UNM job information. March stated that the old system will continue to be used for the next few months.

But once the new system is operating, applicants can create an electronic version of their rÇsumÇ and also have it automatically applied to specific job openings.

"Building one rÇsumÇ saves a lot of time. One application works for all jobs," junior Ricky Anderson said. Anderson is majoring in general management and was responsible for loading and testing a portion of the images on the Web site.

"Everyone I've talked to loves it so far," he said.

The system is revised and updated frequently so that employment information, including application deadlines, is as current as possible.

The new employment center will be at the corner of University and Lomas Boulevards. It will feature six workstations with Internet access and staff available to help users with questions or problems. The center is scheduled to open in January.

"It will be a full one-stop service for employment at UNM," March said. "Access is opening up to people and leveling the playing field,"

One advantage of the Web-based system, officials said, will be its availability to out-of-state applicants.

"New Mexico is a rural state, and eJOBS was designed to make it easier for someone in Hobbs to look for a job just as easily as people in Albuquerque," March said. "We had some rÇsumÇs from California a couple hours after we went live."

March said the planning took about a year and the programming itself took about six months.
