Student charged with sex crime

Former student arraigned for molesting seven-year-old

A former student of the UNM School of Medicine was arraigned Sept. 13 on six counts of third-degree criminal sexual contact of a minor - 16 months after he allegedly molested his former girlfriend's seven-year-old daughter.

Christopher Tape, a former undergraduate student in the School of Medicine, is no longer taking classes or performing clinical rotations at the UNM Hospital, said Sam Giammo, director of public affairs for the UNM Health Sciences Center.

"He is not currently involved with any activities at the School of Medicine," Giammo said.

However, University officials could not say when or why Tape stopped clinical rotations.

"Because of the legal issues involved, I could not comment any further on that," Giammo said.

The six-count indictment stems from a May 2001 incident where the victim's mother called Albuquerque police after her daughter reportedly told her that Tape had touched her buttocks on two separate occasions while at the home the three shared.

The incidents allegedly occurred when the mother of the victim left her daughter with Tape while she was kayaking at a local high school.

Both times, according to the APD report, Tape allegedly took off the girl's underwear, spanked her and then rubbed her buttocks. The report also states that the victim also told police Tape allegedly would make her pose in several positions without her underwear.

The report also states that the victim's mother told police that around the time of the alleged incident, Tape had been downloading pictures of women dressed as young girls.

Once APD officers began to question Tape about the incident, he reportedly waived his rights and told them his version.

According to the APD report, Tape told police he was disciplining the child for acting up by spanking her with a belt and then rubbing her buttocks to check for injuries.

Messages left by the Daily Lobo at Tape's residence were not immediately returned Tuesday.

Tape was not arrested after he was interviewed by police, but was arrested and booked into Bernalillo County Detention Center in July after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court records show Tape posted a $25,000 bond July 10, 2001.

The alleged incident occurred while Tape was working as a medical resident at the Bernalillo County Detention Center.
