LETTER: Sorority members' behavior alarming

Editor,

What exactly is the purpose of sororities? Do they represent the University and the student body in a respected manner as I have previously thought them to? According to Alpha Chi Omega's vision statement, its members are encouraged to "achieve the highest moral, cultural and intellectual level in the art of daily living." However, contrary to popular belief, the conduct of Alpha Chi Omega's members appears to be in contradiction to their stated standards.

On Sept. 5, 2002, I was assaulted by numerous members of this "esteemed" organization. Several women who attack one person definitely does not portray what one would envision members of a leading women's organization to be. Is this rhetoric for oxy . . . morons? Moreover, the mere knowledge of the fact that this organization, with its more than 60 members, has such a large presence on our campus causes me great discomfort. Therefore, I write this letter neither out of vengeance nor anger, rather out of concern for others that may fall victim to the same heinous acts that I have.

Consequently, I encourage the UNM community to ask itself whether this incident was a reflection of the social academics that are learned by this elite group or simply the consequence of self-inflicted intoxication that lent itself to absence of responsibility and the appearance of power by numbers.

In all honesty, I myself am unsure of the true answer. Although one thing is certain, I am alarmed that these women, who dutifully pride themselves in leadership, education, culture, philanthropy and strong moral principles, could partake in such a classless and barbaric act.
