Gunfire sprays student's house early Sunday

After a late night party, a house being rented by a UNM student athlete was sprayed with more than 30 rounds of gunfire in the 2700 block of Hyder Avenue.

Jeff Arbogast, public information officer for the Albuquerque Police Department, said the shooting occurred at 5:21 a.m., Sunday, and could have involved either an automatic or a semi-automatic weapon.

"That's difficult to say," he said.

None of the people who lived in the house, including the student athlete, were home at the time of the shooting, Arbogast said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The shooting reportedly occurred after a large party was thrown at the residence Saturday night. At some point during or after the party, police said there was an altercation between two unidentified individuals.

It is not known if there is a connection between the shootings and the individuals in the fight, Arbogast said.

Police said witnesses to the incident could provide little information about the shooting, including the number of people involved and if it was a drive-by or not.

Arbogast added that police are unsure if the student's house was the intended target of the shooting.

The bullets, which smashed into the front door, porch and front windows, completely passed through some portions of the stucco walls. A large front window at the residence was completely boarded up yesterday afternoon.

The student who lived in the house has reportedly moved out.

Police said they have no suspects or motives in the case.

Arbogast said police have completed their investigation, but have no suspects in the case or a motive for the shooting.
