LETTER: PET scanner a boon

Thank you for reporting on UNM’s recent acquisition of a PET scanner and its unique ability to image metabolic patterns. Our Health Science Center’s current brochure highlighting research lists their Diabetes Center as funded the most. In light of this, it is hoped that they will look for interesting ways in which PET can be applied to diabetes, which is a metabolic disease.

There is the danger that this new technology will serve mainly esoteric research that does not benefit the people who have paid for it through the State of New Mexico. Diabetes for instance occurs disproportionately more in our American Indian population.
