Editor,
I am writing regarding the political cartoon in your July 25 edition of the Daily Lobo. This is on page 4, in your “Opinion” section.
I am frankly disgusted and appalled at this cartoon, depicting two Middle Eastern men, one saying to the other “You ever wonder why Israelis strap their bombs to jets instead of people?” while the other man has a bomb strapped to his back.
I am revolted by the blatant racism of the cartoon. Not only is the caption disgusting, but the worst part is the actual drawing itself. The men are stereotyped in the most tasteless way, no better than the racism exemplified by people in some movies, on stage, etc. in the 1930s to 1940s, wearing “blackface” to look like African-Americans.
This issue of the Daily Lobo(tomy) is the “Welcome back UNM students” issue. What impression is this cartoon going to make on the new students, not to mention the foreign students, at UNM?
Well, that’s obvious. As I said, it’s appalling. It’s unimaginable. Only a far right-wing Jesse Helms worshipper, or a white supremacist would find that cartoon amusing.

I was reluctant to write this letter, only because it shows that I had the lapse of consciousness to actually pick up and read your daily rag. Never again. I’ve tolerated the misspellings, the grammatical errors and every other stupid column you write, but this is too much.
You owe a serious apology to your readers.
