COLUMN: ASUNM columnists to keep students updated

by Jennifer Onuska and Heather Gabel

Guest Columnists

Well, summer is over and it's time to hit the books.

As you walk around campus you might notice that there are still cockroaches, the SUB is still under construction and the "Bandido's Man" is hard at work again. But over the summer we, your student government, have been hard at work at some behind-the-scene changes.

You may think, "Wow, I'm reading an article written by the student government." That is because we have decided that one of the best ways to reach students is through the Daily Lobo. We plan on alternating this column between the president and vice president to inform you about what's going on in your student government. Our goal is to represent you, but the only way we can do this is through communication. Please respond to our columns and let us know how you feel on pertinent issues, because this is one of our best links to the student body.

We would like to welcome you back and hope that you will make the decision to get more involved in your student government this year. There are many standing committees and executive agencies that still have open positions, and we would love for you to come join our team. You also can voice your opinions at our full Senate meetings held every other Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Kiva auditorium.

At this point you may be thinking that this column is kind of dragging. How can student government be interesting? But we want you to know that ASUNM is interesting. This is where your voice can be heard throughout the campus, whether it is through a committee, a senator, or one of the exciting executive agencies.

You may not realize that your student government brought Jay Leno's "Jay Walking" and MTV's "Road Rules" to UNM last year. In fact, ASUNM also is responsible for showing the "Wizard of Oz" this Thursday by the Duck Pond and is co-sponsoring the week's worth of activities called Welcome Back Days. Please come meet us on Thursday where we will be serving pizza at Welcome Back Days.

It is through this column that we hope to bridge this gap in communication and inform you about ASUNM, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico, your student government.

Jennifer Onuska is the ASUNM president and Heather Gabel is the ASUNM vice president. Send e-mails at asunm@unm.edu or stop by the ASUNM office on the second floor of the Student Services Center, Room 262.
