Editor,
The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled school vouchers constitutional. Now the state Legislature has no excuse for pouring more money into the pit that our public schools have become. Why is it that government is so willing to spend endless amounts of money on programs that no longer live up to expectation?
It’s the same old mentality; if it’s broke, throw more money at it. If private companies did business like this they would go bankrupt. APS just wants to raise property owners’ taxes with another bond and we’re the evil ones that vote against it.
The problem with the education system today isn’t about money; it’s about parental involvement in children’s lives and education. It’s hard to make ends meet let alone be successful. Add kids to the mix and something has to give. In today’s rat race, children have become a liability to the ambitions of self-concerned individuals. The demands placed upon parents by careers are not conducive to a strong involvement in their children’s education. The majority of delinquency is traceable back to poor parental involvement and a lack of positive role models. Until parents are willing to accept responsibility for their children, nothing is going to change.
The current educational system was developed before the Model-T. We fly to the moon and beyond today — let our educational system go there, too. School vouchers represent the attempts made by some parents to provide better opportunities for their children.
Perhaps the amount received from a school voucher should vary dependant upon the parents’ income. Vouchers represent a way out for kids whose parents are willing to sacrifice and accept responsibility for their offspring. School vouchers are the first step towards a brighter future for all of our children.
