Sports in Brief

Senior tennis player Courtney Choate was one of 15 student-athletes named to the Verizon Academic All-American at-large team on June 13. The group comprises female student-athletes competing in tennis, swimming, golf, rifle, skiing, crew and gymnastics. Choate graduated from UNM in May with a degree in marketing and a 4.03 GPA.

She earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference and Verizon Academic All-District awards this season. Choate also received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region's Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award and was a national runnerup for the Sporting News Radio Socrates Award for athletic and academic excellence in 2002.

UNM men's basketball finished in the top 10 in attendance last season, averaging 16,426 fans per home contest for the 2001-2002 season. The Lobos had the seventh-highest average in the nation, ahead of the University of North Carolina, Kansas University and the University of Memphis.

It was the 36th straight year the Lobos placed in the top 11 in the nation for attendance.
