Sports in Brief

UNM center fielder Matt Young, was named to the freshmen All-American team by Collegiate Baseball magazine Wednesday. He was also was a first-team Mountain West Conference pick. Freshman third baseman Josh Mader was named to the honorable mention team.

In other baseball news, junior second baseman Troy Cairns was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 46th round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft on Wednesday. Cairns was the only Lobo selected in the draft

UNM senior golfer Scott Hailes was named honorable mention All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America Monday. Hailes, who led the Lobos with a 72.19 stroke average during the 2001-02 season, finished in a team-best 38th place at last week's NCAA championship in Columbus, Ohio.

UNM junior heptathlete Keren Sari-Bentzur finished ninth in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday, May 30. Sari-Bentzur scored 5,285 points in the heptathlon competition, the second-highest point total of her career. The Lobos' other competitor in the championships, freshman Kelli Myers, failed to advance to the finals in the high jump competition.

In other track news, six team members were recently named Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Awards recipients.

The award recognizes undergraduates who compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain at least a 3.2 GPA and are active on their campuses or communities.

Senior Kisha Smith and sophomore Sarah Gonzales were second team women's track and field selections, while junior Kim Baca and senior Monique Harris were third-team and honorable mention selections. Junior Daniel Taradash and sophomore Ben Ortega were each third team men's track and field honorees.
