LETTER: Government not ideal model of employment

Editor,

I totally disagree with Brandon Curtis' thesis that businesses should be stripped "of their right to dismiss without cause and without notice and make them abide along the lines we expect the government to follow."

First, whose business is it? Employers have the right to set their contracts with employees, and except for limited cases, government should not interfere. In these "at will" contracts, the employee also has the right to simply up and leave. Does Mr. Curtis wish to impose the same "show cause" reason on the employee?

Second, I have worked in/for the government in a variety of positions. I have observed first-hand the result of good performance not being a necessary condition for continued employment. I'm sure Lobo readers have their own related experiences.

Finally, I have to laugh at the idea of the government being held up as a model employer. Does Mr. Curtis really mean this? As I see it, Mr. Curtis' model has a better fit with the workers' paradises that used to exist in Eastern European countries.
