The UNM track team finished the season at the Mountain West Conference outdoor track championships May 18. The Lobo men finished fourth in the six-team field, while the women finished seventh in their eight-team field. Top finishers for the team were sophomore Mark Johnson, who won the men's decathlon, and junior Keren Sari-Bentzur, who placed third in the heptathlon. Both are participating in the NCAA outdoor track championships in Baton Rouge, La. this weekend. Also representing UNM at the NCAA championship is freshman high jumper Kelly Myers, who is ranked 11th in the country. The two Lobo women are the first to participate in the NCAA championships since 1998. Brigham Young University captured both the men's and women's championships.

UNM senior golfer Will Collins is one of five finalists for the inaugural Byron Nelson Award. The award, which is presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America, is given to a senior college golfer who displays excellence on the golf course, as well as in the classroom and the community. Collins also was named to the all-Mountain West Conference team this year for the third time in his career and also earned academic all-district with a 3.87 GPA with a major in travel and tourism.
Collins is one of two MWC golfers named finalists for the award. The other is Ben Leestma of the Air Force Academy. The winner of the Byron Nelson Award will be named in the first week of June.

The UNM softball team finished its season on a down note, being eliminated from the MWC tournament championship in Provo, Utah May 10. The tournament was also the last hurrah for softball coach Susan Craig, whose contract was not renewed by UNM following the tournament. Craig, a graduate of UNM, had a record of 672-586-2 in 25 years as coach.

On the field the fourth-seeded Lobos started the MWC championships by defeating fifth-seed BYU 4-1 in the afternoon then fell 4-1 to top-seeded San Diego State University that evening. UNM was eliminated by sixth-seeded Colorado State University on Friday, losing 5-3 to the Rams. UNM finished the season 18-29-1, 9-10 in MWC play.
