Speakers to offer encouragement

State leaders and an American Indian poet are among the UNM convocation speakers scheduled to offer their thoughts to prospective graduates this weekend.

The departmental ceremonies, which are Friday and Saturday, supplement the University's main commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday in The Pit.

In addition to the ceremonies, the UNM Alumni Association will offer an open house for graduating seniors daily this week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hodgin Hall. The group also co-sponsors the University president's reception and picnic from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at University House, 1901 Roma Ave. NE.

Individual convocations are listed below, and all events are Saturday unless otherwise noted:

- American Studies Department, 1 p.m. in Room 125 of Dane Smith Hall. Speaker: Craig Newbill, executive director of the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities.
