Sasha, Digweed stir up the Sunshine

Saturday, May 18, the Delta Heavy Tour, featuring the famed British hard house DJ's Sasha and John Digweed hit the Sunshine theatre.

The duo first gained fame through club appearances and innovative remixes, including the acclaimed Renaissance series. In 1996, they signed to the Ministry of Sound label and released a double album called Northern Exposure, distributed through Moonshine Records in the U.S. In 1997, a second two-disc compilation, Northern Exposure 2, followed.

DJs Sasha and Digweed's acclaim is not attributed to their studio albums, but rather to their live shows. For the first hour and half, the crowd was subdued, the music was soft and the dance floor was sparsely populated. At 9:30 p.m. things picked up, a pair of bass speakers - each the size of a small car - kicked on, vibrating the entire theatre. The lights dimmed and the crowd went wild. Glow sticks started popping just as dual lasers split the smoke-filled air with neon green. The empty dance floor filled instantly. The soft haunting sound that first filled the room vanished and was replaced with an angry beat and an amazingly mixed melody.

From that point on the night was incredible. The DJs kept everyone on the floor dancing. The visuals were outstanding. A large screen mounted over the DJ showed bizarre animation including doll cutouts, lightning effects and ancient Aztec imagery mixed with new age technology.

The show began at 8 p.m. and continued well past 2 a.m. The DJs remained anonymous and no introductions were given. Perhaps that's what the Delta Heavy Tour is all about. No vocals, no spotlights, this show was not about the performers. This was about dance music and giving the crowd what it paid for - an unbelievable musical experience.
