Editor,
A few days ago there was a letter to the editor complaining that the Daily Lobo and UNM Police don't do enough to keep people informed about crimes that take place on campus. Case-in-point was a woman who was brutalized in her dorm room while her roommate looked on. It took a letter to the editor to bring light to that case.
In a letter published Tuesday ("Irresponsible identification may brand suspect for life"), freshman Russell Moore complains about the Daily Lobo reporting the name of a rape suspect. In the letter, Mr. Moore demonstrates his concern for the reputation of the accused rapist by melodramatically and categorically claiming that Matt Stafford's (the alleged rapist) life is in ruins because the Daily Lobo is doing its job of reporting news that is obviously important to its readers. If he is acquitted, Mr. Stafford's life will soon go back to normal.
On the other hand, the victim's life will never be the same again - regardless of the outcome of this trial. It's obvious from Mr. Moore's letter that he identifies with the alleged assailant and really hasn't given any thought to the victim. What about her rights and the right of every woman on campus to live a life without fear of assault?
