Editor,
I am not a member of Sigma Chi or any other fraternity. I really don't care one way or another which fraternities keep charters at UNM and which ones don't.
But, I do feel that it is about time that people stopped kicking a dead horse. Sigma Chi lost their charter. It's over, all right?
For all those people who wanted Sigma Chi gone, you finally got it. But stop dragging the members through the mud. They have gotten what was deemed to be a just punishment: a revoked charter and a huge front-page article highlighting events that I am sure they are not proud of.
Now it's time to leave them alone. This is not a group of horrible people. A few members of the group made a few really bad decisions, but that does not give people the right to label every single member of Sigma Chi as a low-life racist.
With one exception, the offenses at Sigma Chi did not really hurt anyone except the fraternity members themselves. The members of Sigma Chi are, for the most part, being attacked for partying and making less than cordial remarks to passersby. If that's the road that the UNM community wants to take, we had better get rid of all the fraternities. And, while we're at it, we should get rid of most of the dorms, too, because the same things occur there.

Douglas Fields, obviously some sort of confrontation took place between you and Jason Caldwell, and you are free to think whatever you like about Jason. But I find it repulsive that you choose to mock and degrade him personally in the school newspaper.
I am surprised that the Lobo would actually print a letter specifically attacking the character of a private student. Fields, your letter is little more than a childish taunt of "ha ha, your charter got taken away and I'm the one who got it taken."
Jason is free to do what he wants within the rules and laws of the University, and as long as he stays within these guidelines, your opinion of his character is totally irrelevant. I can tell that you haven't spoken to Jason at any great length, because I know him, and your letter is a very poor representation of his character.
I am sure there are people who don't like you - would you want them to write a letter to the Lobo and rant and rave about what an ass they think you are? If you have issues with Caldwell, take them up with him. No one else really cares about your opinions.
I found it disgusting, and I'm sure many others did too.
The Lobo degraded itself as a publication by printing your infantile attack. As soon as Sigma Chi loses its charter, people feel the need to point out everything that is wrong with the fraternity.
But, why did no one talk about people like Tim Reed while the charter still existed? Tim was one of the forepersons for the chapter. He also is now an ASUNM senator and involved in many other aspects of improving UNM. Why not write about him, Professor Fields?
So Sigma Chi members are paying their dues. Their poor decisions have been highlighted on the front page of this paper, as well as the Journal and Tribune. The majority of their membership includes good people, and I am sure they get the message.
Enough is enough.
