Artists join together to preserve the land

The 3 Sided Hole existed from May 23-27 on a privately owned plot of land about one hour west of Albuquerque, overlooking the Rio Puerco Valley. Artists, musicians, poets and performers gathered to celebrate the building of a strong creative arts community and to preserve and restore the landscape of New Mexico.

The 3 Sided Hole has grown in the past five years from a collection of friends holding an occasional overnight camp to an annual community endeavor. The calendar of events has included puppet-and mask-making, large-scale Silk Tie-dye, and earth-form sculptures. Local poets Don McIver and Manuel Gonzalez gave readings, and, in the evening, local bands Panjea, Wagogo, Felonious Groove Foundation, The Withdrawals and many others performed in the GeoDome and The Hole.

One goal of the 3 Sided Hole is to promote environmental preservation. Its closing ceremony included a workshop on "bioneering," a holistic approach to environmental restoration. This year 3 Sided Hole donated money to the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and together, the organizations hope to stem the growth of Rio Rancho and prevent development from invading the Rio Puerco Valley.
