Graduate students in the UNM sports administration program are rallying behind charities that serve at-risk youth and disabled children by sponsoring two fund-raisers this month.
The first is a soccer tournament, the Enterprise Rent-a-Car 7 vs. 7 V.I.P Open Cup, which will be on Saturday at Johnson Field. Blimpie Subs and Salads, Costco Wholesale, Homes by Marie and Wondra Dental Care P.C are sponsoring the tournament.
"This is to help raise money and exposure for kids and families with special needs," graduate student David Flores said. "One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the V.I.P Soccer Handicapped Children League for disabled soccer players."
The admission fee is $15 per player, with no more than 12 players allowed per team. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
The New Mexico Golf Classic will be held at the UNM Championship Golf Course at 1 p.m. on April 26.
"They held this event in the past and it was an award-winning event, now we are trying to make a comeback," said Dr. Nancy Lough, an assistant professor in the program.

The proceeds go to the New Day Youth and Family Services, a nonprofit outreach shelter that provides support for children and families. Seasons Restaurant and Zangara Dodge are the main sponsors, which, includes a chance to win a new Dodge Viper for sinking a hole in one.
The entry fee is $150 per player and lunch will be included. The registration deadline is today.
