The UNM softball team finally won a series against a Mountain West Conference opponent by defeating Colorado State University 7-1 in the first game Saturday, while the second game was canceled.
The Lobos (14-22-1, 6-5 in the conference) previously had split doubleheaders versus the five conference opponents they played. Saturday, they received a complete game performance by sophomore pitcher Amy Dumas in the first game and inclement weather prompted the cancellation of the second game.
CSU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Amanda Kocis scored on a Maren Christensen single through the left side of the infield. That score would hold until the top of the fifth inning when UNM rallied for six runs on five hits.
Freshman third baseman Cassie Chavez led the way for the Lobos with a three-for-five performance, including a run. Michelle Carter went two-for-three in the game and Brooke Chaffee walked four times.
Dumas pitched the entire game for the Lobos, giving up just one run on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
The Lobos continue on the road next weekend when they travel to face the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Friday and San Diego State University on Sunday.
