Sports in brief

The UNM baseball team will try to stop a four-game losing streak this weekend when it takes on San Diego State University on the road.

The Lobos are 15-17 and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference heading into the weekend battle versus the first-place Aztecs, who are 5-4 in the conference, 22-11 overall.

UNM is in third place in the conference after getting swept last weekend by the University of Nevada at Las Vegas on the road. The visitors' dugout has been unkind to UNM this season, where the Lobos have compiled a 1-11 road record.

The UNM women's golf team heads to Tempe, Ariz. this weekend to compete in the 2002 Ping/Arizona State University Invitational.

The 23rd-ranked Lobos' fourth spring tournament of the season consists of 15 teams, including 10 ranked teams. Last season, UNM finished in eighth place in the same tournament.

The UNM women's tennis team hits the road for important conference match-ups this weekend against three opponents in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The 50th-ranked Lobos are 9-7 and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. They will try to keep their unbeaten conference record intact when they take on the Air Force Academy Friday, 22nd-ranked San Diego State University on Saturday and 19th-ranked University of Nevada at Las Vegas on Sunday.

Sophomore Tjasa Suvak earned the conference Player of the Week award for her performance last week, winning both of her singles matches to help UNM defeat the University of Utah and Brigham Young University on the road.

The UNM track and field team will try to continue its stellar outdoor season this weekend when the Lobos compete in split-squad action.

UNM has 17 athletes in Austin, Texas, participating in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which started Thursday and runs through Saturday.

The rest of the team will journey to Las Cruces to take on intrastate rival New Mexico State University on Saturday in the NMSU Springtime Classic.
