The UNM softball team will take a break from conference play Wednesday to battle intrastate rival New Mexico State University in a doubleheader at Lobo Field.
The Lobos have struggled so far this season, compiling a 7-18-1 record. They started Mountain West Conference action last week and split a doubleheader at home against Colorado State University.
UNM lost the first game to the Rams 11-1 and bounced back in the second game with a 2-1 victory. The Lobos will try to use the win to build some momentum against NMSU.
UNM has only won six of 24 games out of conference, but the competition for in-state supremacy is usually heated.
The Aggies come into the game with a 17-25 record and have lost three of their last four games. The Lobos might be able to take advantage of the friendly confines at home because NMSU is only 3-11 on the road while UNM is 2-4 at Lobo Field.
The games should be low scoring because both teams have had trouble putting runs on the scoreboard all season long. The Aggies have a .237 batting average and scored only 3.4 runs a game, while the Lobos scored 2.6 runs and are batting .235 this season.

The one bright spot offensively for UNM is junior outfielder Kelly Glass, who has team-highs in batting average with .375, runs with 10 and hits with 31. The pitching staff has kept the Lobos in many games, compiling a 4.26 earned run average. Freshman pitcher Lauren McCoy leads the staff with a 1-3 record and a 3.46 ERA.
The first game will start at noon, with the second contest immediately following.
