LETTER: Violence cannot yield peace

Editor,

Anger, sadness and shame of being an American overwhelmed me when I read Dr. Yaron Brook's letter in the Daily Lobo Tuesday. It was a brutal reminder of how many people here in America still believe that shoving a tank down someone's throat can "force" peace. Wasn't it Albert Einstein who once said, "Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding?"

America is talking out of both sides of her mouth. Americans claim that they want to put an end to terrorism, yet they unabashedly back Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, providing him support while he commits the ultimate terrorist act: the occupation of Palestinian territories and the displacement of millions of Palestinian refugees.

Haven't Americans done enough damage when we interfered in the Middle East in the 1940s? The blood of this situation also is on our hands. The concept of a Palestinian nation may be a "fantasy" to some, but please be assured, my Palestinian brothers, there are Americans who are compassionate to your long and arduous struggle and continue to have hope for a better day.
