LETTER: Those who reach students deserve cheers, not jeers

Editor,

I have read several letters in the Daily Lobo about Professor Cyrino's unique teaching style and manner of dress, and I have one question.

Why are we beating our faculty to death about little things like style of dress and ways of teaching? People in life have different ways of expressing themselves, but that should not inhibit them from being a valued professor of a University.

Personally, I have never taken a course with Cyrino, but I have had other teachers like her who were equally engaging. I would rather have a teacher explain things to me at a level that I can find easy to understand. From what I have read, this class is taught at an introductory level. I would assume that students taking this class would have very little or no understanding of Greek mythology.

Greek mythology is a very interesting class to take, but with the wrong teacher lecturing, it can be extremely boring to some people. Let's face facts here folks, in today's society, we have to make learning entertaining. The generation of children that grew up in the '80s and '90s has been hit with one level of entertainment after another. So if a professor needs to spice things up and make class entertaining to get a point across to students, then so be it.

Now, there are limits that are in place on campus as to just how unique a teacher can get in teaching. Those limits are set by their department. What I find interesting is that they have a problem with her being the head of her particular department, but they have no problem with her being a professor. I hope she continues teaching Greek mythology because she sounds like a teacher that would not put me to sleep, and I might actually learn something for a change.
