Editor,
A brave woman seriously changed my perceptions about UNM and its politics last Friday after class. She stood up in front of our class, with tears in her eyes, and informed us about a girl she knew who was beaten by her roommate's friends in her own dorm room last Saturday.
She was beaten for hours as her roommate simply watched. After they were done with her, they drug her into the bathroom and left her there. Thankfully her other roommate came home, found her and took care of her. This girl was in intensive care for days, partially scalped and in a coma. She may have to live the rest of her life with brain damage.
After almost a week since the incident occurred, the question that the girl's courageous friend raised was, why doesn't anybody know about this incident? The question I have to ask is, why wasn't I notified of this? I live in the dorms. This is our home and we should be safe in our home.
Where was this girl's security? Where are the resident advisers, the articles and the news coverage warning us? Besides this horrible incidence, girls are getting raped on campus and vehicles are being stolen from the parking lots. What else is occurring on our campus that we don't find out about?
Statistics should be published for our awareness and safety in the Daily Lobo. The Albuquerque Journal posts a daily report on calls that police responded to the previous day. Why can't that be done with our paper? Are people afraid that no one will want to come to our University if the student population knew the truth?
I am a volunteer at the Agora Crisis Center. We find out about events that no one else ever hears about all the time. This girl was a student. She was beginning a life at UNM. She trusted our campus. Why did the perpetrators think that they could get away with this? We need to protect ourselves and not just let this disappear.
