WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Provost William C. Gordon today announced his resignation from Wake Forest University. Gordon came to Wake Forest four years ago from the University of New Mexico, where he was President from 1998 to 2002. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wake Forrest.
In his letter of resignation, Gordon said he has done all he can as Provost, and feels it is time for him to move on.
"Heck," he explained in a telephone interview, "I've never held any administrative position for more than four years. As a boy hunting rabbits, I learned that a moving target is harder to hit than a stationary one. That's why I left New Mexico at the end of a good budget year and the start of a bad one. But, hey - I lasted longer than (former UNM coach Fran) Fraschilla!"
Gordon, 59, has accepted a position as Assistant Principal at the high school he attended in Homebody, Georgia. "I wouldn't leave Wake Forest for any other job," he said in his letter. "Commitment is my middle name. I feel a strong loyalty to each of the institutions I've been connected with over the years."
In his telephone interview, Gordon explained that he likes the idea of bringing his career full circle, back to its roots in the Southeast.
"I fully intend to retire at Homebody High," he said. "Of course, if there's an opening for a kindergarten teacher at my old elementary school ... who knows?"

Editor's note: Fran Fraschilla coached the UNM men's basketball team from 1999 to 2002. He earned more money than Gordon and his resignation netted bigger headlines. Today, Fraschilla cleans locker rooms at Vito's Health Club in Brooklyn, N. Y. The University of New Mexico pays him a salary of $152,500 a year as part of the buy-out of his contract.
