EDITORIAL: Editor bids farewell

After four years working in one place, it is really hard to say goodbye, but change is constant and comes regardless of whether you are ready for it.

I will walk away from UNM with a bachelor's degree, but I credit the Daily Lobo for providing me with an amazing and invaluable education. I also am incredibly grateful to the community for serving as a wonderful classroom.

After writing hundreds of stories, a few stand out as ones that I will never forget. The first came my freshman year when I interviewed the father of a UNM honor student who had been killed in a drive-by shooting. The same day of the shooting, he held back tears while telling me about his son. The man wept near the conclusion of the interview and ended by pleading that people understand that his son was a good boy.

While some stories are emotional, others can be inspiring. I may have voiced my discontent about certain aspects of the University, but it offers an endless supply of people who overcome phenomenal challenges.

And as much as I have learned from thousands of interviews, the people who have come and gone through the Daily Lobo offices during the past four years have been among the most hard-working and incredible people I have ever met. Through tumultuous and successful times, my co-workers have taught me about life, deadlines, myself and the person I aspire to be.

When I wrote an editorial earlier this year thanking my peers, I was criticized for failing to name more than 100 people employed at the Daily Lobo. I chose not to do so then because it seemed like a taxing feat that should only be taken on once a year. So I now offer my utmost thanks to our most consistent contributors and people who made this newspaper great this year.

With a community so big and generous, I surely have forgotten many who have helped me along the way. I cannot thank this University enough for all it has done for me.

But, it is time for me to move on, and I am grateful to leave the newspaper in capable hands. I foresee bigger and better things for this community thanks to an outstanding group of students poised to lead the Daily Lobo.

Mil gracias y buena suerte.
